Bonus….vacation mentality & good attitude

The area that is known as Los Cabos was first populated by the Pericue tribe.  Starting in 1533, Herman Cortes sent expeditions to explore the Californias.  He founded the Puerto de Santa Cruz (Port of the Holy Cross) in 1535 which today is known as La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur.  In 1697 the conquest of this region truly began when Father Kino and Father Salvatierra, Jesuit priests, founded the Loreto mission and began the evangelization of the Indians.  In the 16th and 17th centuries the Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula was a favorite hiding place for pirates who plundered the Spanish galleons.

Not much was heard about Cabo until the early 1950’s, when private yachts, wealthy Americans and Hollywood celebrities began mooring in the Cabo bay to get away from it all.  In 1973 the Transpeninsular Highway #1 was completed offering 1,050 miles of peninsula to be traveled by car, motor home and motorcycles.  The area has been transposed from a small fishing village to one of the fastest growing resort areas in Mexico with excellent sport fishing all year round.

The area known as Los Cabos today is actually comprised of the city of San Jose Del Cabo and the city of Cabo San Lucas that are joined together by what is known as “the corridor”.  Resorts, housing developments, beaches and places to visit are located in both cities and all along the corridor between them.  There is something for everyone in this vacation paradise.

No Reported Safety Concerns
In Cabo San Lucas

“You have to make a distinction between the border incidents that are going on and the places like Playacar, Cancun, Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta, which are exceedingly safe.”

-NBC News
Reported February 26, 2009

Recently, the media has reported several drug cartel skirmishes occurring along the Mexican border. These problems are happening mainly in the border towns of Tijuana, Chihuahua City and Ciudad Juarez. Due to the increase in cartel activity, the State Department has issued a travel alert for these areas of Mexico. Cabo San Lucas is geographically isolated from these reported problem areas. Located on the southern tip of Baja California, Cabo San Lucas is approximately 1,000 miles from the problem border towns. Cabo San Lucas is a key tourist location where thousands of people from all over the world travel to every year. As a major spring break destination, Cabo San Lucas is visited by thousands of college students annually. Cabo San Lucas is a safe place to vacation but like any travel destination, travelers should exercise common-sense precautions.

Villa Vacations once seemed only possible for the wealthy, but today villa rentals have emerged as value-based travel opportunities for everyone. While statistics show that only 8% of travelers have stayed in a vacation rental, 90% report they are likely to plan this kind of vacation again. In general a group of people traveling together splitting the cost will keep pricing down. In addition to cost savings, villas offer guests more space, home-like comforts, and no tips, taxes or service charges associated with hotel rooms. Private homes and condos have kitchens for cooking, living areas for gathering together and the appeal of being part of the community.

Hotels may enjoy the advantages of brand recognition, familiar reservation processes, and on-site staff. For those booking a vacation rental it may mean stepping out of that comfort zone in order to appreciate the advantages that vacation rentals offer. Perceived cons of vacation rentals may include being unfamiliar with the property, questions about on-site staff, and concerns about quality. These concerns are mitigated by dealing with villa or vacation rental agencies that manage vacation properties for owners who offer many of the same services that hotels offer their guests including check in services, housekeeping, 24-hr. maintenance and concierge services.

The benefits of vacation rentals generally outweigh the negatives by offering more space in multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, and separate living areas; more amenities with fully equipped kitchens, private hot tubs and convenient locations with greater privacy. In many communities the option of vacation rentals provides travelers with the opportunity to become part of a neighborhood.

Vacation rental homes can range from budget studio condos to luxurious, expensive villas in the world’s most desirable locations with all the amenities one would find in any luxury accommodation.

Baja Sur Vacation Rentals offers over 100 properties for those traveling to the Los Cabos area in Baja California Sur. Units as small as a studio to as large as a 10 bedroom villa are offered in the communities of San Jose del Cabo, along highway 1, commonly referred to as “the corridor”, Cabo San Lucas, and Todo Santos about 45 minutes from Cabo San Lucas. One of our Cabo staff will meet and greet travelers at the chosen home to review operating systems of the home and answer any questions. Full concierge services are available.

Mexico is not all about tacos, margaritas, salsa, tequila, sunshine and sunsets, inexpensive living, sombreros and mariachi bands.

Living in Mexico is also about health care and where do we go for it when we need it. We have all heard about difficulties ex-patriates have had in getting quality health care when in the land of the Aztecs and Mayans. Often a language barrier prevails for those of Anglo descent.

At a time of a major medical crisis is it as simple as going to the yellow pages or the Internet in Phoenix, Calgary, Buffalo or Toronto to get to an English speaking health care provider. Not that acceptable medical care or better is unavailable in Mexico, it is, but what if your preferred health care providers are in your hometown USA or Canada? What if you want the comfort of your Medicare medical professionals or your provincial healthcare plan in Canada? American Medicare may reimburse you for a small amount of emergency care to stabilize you but does not pay for hospitalization in or evacuation from a foreign country. The Canadian health care plans pay a pittance although out-of-province insurance can be counted upon, but in many if not most cases it is the traveler’s responsibility to pays all charges and then submit them for recovery payment.

If the illness or injury is a critical one it may well be your hometown option is best for you and your loved ones. To be repatriated to those hometown providers thousands of miles from where you are spending your time in Mexico is very costly. Especially if a flight by medically equipped jet is required. This can run into tens of thousands of dollars. More important is the air ambulance provider wants to be paid up front, in other words, cash in advance.

A very affordable answer can be a prepaid inexpensive travel membership service like 20 year old SkyMed International Inc,

As Maralyne Hoenes, Kalamazoo, Michigan said after suffering a critical illness in Cancun, Mexico, “If it weren’t for SkyMed I would not be alive today.” SkyMed repatriated Mr. and Mrs. Hoenes to their hometown.
