When most people think of Baja California Sur, they picture golden beaches, turquoise waters, and unforgettable sunsets. But beyond the scenery lies a vibrant food culture that blends Mexican traditions with the fresh bounty of the sea. From famous seafood tacos to authentic ranch-style dishes, Baja Sur’s cuisine is a feast worth exploring. Here are some of the must-try flavors during your next visit.
1. Fish Tacos – A Baja Classic
No trip to Baja is complete without tasting a fish taco. Typically made with fresh white fish that’s battered, fried, or grilled, these tacos are topped with cabbage, salsa, and a drizzle of creamy sauce. They’re simple, flavorful, and widely available—from street stalls to fine dining restaurants.
2. Chocolate Clams (Almejas Chocolatas)
Named for the color of their shells, not their taste, chocolate clams are a regional delicacy often prepared on the grill with garlic butter and herbs. Some local chefs also bake them in stone ovens, creating a smoky, savory treat that captures the essence of Baja’s coastline.
3. Machaca – Shredded Beef Perfection
A nod to Baja’s ranching heritage, machaca is dried, shredded beef that’s rehydrated and cooked with eggs, peppers, and onions. Traditionally served for breakfast with tortillas and beans, this hearty dish is a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
4. Baja-Style Lobster
Along the Pacific coast, fresh lobster is a specialty often grilled or served with butter and lime. Pair it with rice, beans, and handmade tortillas, and you’ve got a meal that showcases the best of land and sea.
5. Comida Corrida – Traditional Set Meals
For a taste of everyday Baja dining, try a comida corrida—an affordable, multi-course lunch served at many local eateries. These meals usually include soup, a main dish, tortillas, beans, rice, and agua fresca, giving you a true taste of local life.
6. Damiana Liqueur
Round out your culinary adventure with Damiana, a regional herbal liqueur made from the native damiana plant. Traditionally enjoyed as a digestif, it has a sweet, earthy flavor and is often said to have aphrodisiac qualities.
Savor Baja Like a Local
Whether you’re indulging in fresh fish tacos on the beach, enjoying chocolate clams by the grill, or sipping Damiana under the stars, Baja California Sur’s cuisine adds another layer of richness to your vacation. Staying in a vacation rental means you can even bring these flavors home—try cooking with local ingredients in your own kitchen or arrange a private chef to prepare authentic meals for your group.
Cabo San Lucas is one of Mexico’s most sought-after vacation spots, offering stunning beaches, luxury accommodations, and endless opportunities for adventure. If you’re staying in a vacation rental, you have the added benefit of privacy, space, and the comforts of home—plus the flexibility to design your getaway exactly how you want it.
Here’s how to plan the perfect Cabo vacation rental experience from start to finish.
1. Choose the Right Location
Cabo has a variety of neighborhoods and coastal areas, each with its own personality.
- Downtown Cabo San Lucas – Perfect for nightlife, dining, and easy access to the marina.
- Palmilla & San José del Cabo – Known for swimmable beaches, luxury shopping, and a quieter atmosphere.
- Corridor Area – Offers beachfront properties with spectacular views, midway between Cabo and San José.
Consider whether you want to be in the heart of the action or enjoy a more secluded escape.
2. Match the Property to Your Group’s Needs
Think about who’s coming with you.
- Families might prioritize multiple bedrooms, a private pool, and proximity to calm, swimmable beaches.
- Friends and Groups may look for large gathering spaces, game rooms, and outdoor dining areas.
- Couples might prefer cozy villas with oceanfront balconies or private jacuzzis.
At Baja Sur Vacation Rentals, our listings range from luxury beachfront estates to charming condos—so there’s a fit for every style.
3. Take Advantage of Concierge Services
One of the best parts of booking with a professional vacation rental company is access to concierge services. Before you arrive, arrange for:
- Private airport transfers to skip the taxi lines.
- Grocery stocking so your villa is ready with your favorite snacks and drinks.
- Chef services for private dining experiences.
- Excursions like sunset sails, whale watching, or ATV adventures.
With the right planning, you can spend more time relaxing and less time organizing.
4. Plan Activities That Balance Fun and Relaxation
It’s tempting to pack your itinerary, but Cabo is just as much about unwinding as it is about adventure. Mix your days with:
- Active Adventures – Snorkeling at Chileno Bay, ziplining through desert canyons, or sportfishing from the marina.
- Relaxation Days – Poolside lounging, beach walks, or in-villa spa treatments.
Remember, your vacation rental is more than just a place to sleep—it’s part of the experience.
5. Make the Most of Your Rental’s Features
Many Cabo vacation rentals come with amenities you won’t find at a resort. Take advantage of:
- Private pools and hot tubs for sunset swims.
- Outdoor kitchens and BBQs for casual evenings at home.
- Direct beach access for morning strolls and ocean dips.
Your Cabo Vacation, Your Way

Tips on How to Avoid Vacation Rental Scams
With so many fraudulent property listings on the web, we want to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable booking experience and know how to avoid vacation rental scams. It is crucial to exercise due diligence and be cautious when making reservations on different marketing platforms.
When booking a vacation rental house, we recommend booking directly with the agency’s official website and vacation rental platforms, such as Baja Sur Vacation Rentals, and avoid vacation rental scams on certain online marketing platforms. At Baja Sur Vacation Rentals we want to ensure you’re protected as a consumer.
By following these tips, it can help ensure you’re not scammed by the different marketing platforms, such as Airbnb, and avoid vacation rental scams.
Communicating with the Host
– We strongly recommend that you prioritize direct communication with the house owner or agency before finalizing any bookings. This can help to ensure that the listing is legitimate and avoid any potential scams.
– Ask the host questions about the listing and the surrounding area.
– A legitimate host will be responsive and willing to answer your questions.
– Some platforms, such as Airbnb, will tell you not to contact the host outside of the platform before booking. It is very important to speak with someone before booking so that you know that listing is legitimate.
Check Official Websites to Avoid Vacation Rental Scams
– See if the rental property is listed on the rental company’s or owner’s official website.
– If the host is listed as a vacation rental agency or the agency is noted in the host’s description, google that agency to verify the legitimacy and contact them directly. Most all Los Cabos area rental owners and agencies reside in the United States or in the Los Cabos area, not from other countries.
Read Reviews
– Look at the reviews and make sure they seem to talk about the same place you are booking.
– If the individual house does not have reviews, look at the “About the Host” and check their reviews about other villas they list.
Be Wary of Deals That Seem Too Good to Be True
– If a listing seems too good to be true, it probably is.
– Be wary of listings that are significantly cheaper than similar listings in the area.
Please be careful and take all necessary precautions to protect yourself.

Is Cabo San Lucas Safe?
Although the Los Cabos area is already one of the safest places to vacation and reside, the government’s local agencies prioritize the security of its visitors and residents. From the director of tourism to the federal police, their mission is to protect and to serve at the airport, beaches, marina, and on the roads and city streets.
Contrary to what is reported by many mainstream U.S. media, crime is not an all-encompassing problem in México. It is isolated, just as crime in the U.S. is not rampant throughout the contiguous states. Not all of the U.S. is under a crime siege by socially disturbed individuals, and not all of México is involved in drug wars.
Possible tourists have heard or read misleading reports that México is a violent country and canceled their travel plans. México is a very large country, and Los Cabos is far removed from the violence affecting other parts of the nation. The U.S. State Department confirms that millions of U.S. citizens safely visit México each year. This includes tens of thousands who cross the border every day for study, tourism or business and at least one million U.S. citizens who live in México. The Mexican government makes a considerable effort to protect U.S. citizens and other visitors to major tourist destinations. Resort areas and tourist destinations do not see the levels of drug-related violence and crime reported in the border region and in areas along major drug-trafficking route.
Los Cabos is Secure and Safe
The Mexican Naval Marine base supports the local security program by providing protection and assistance in controlling maritime traffic and operating search-and-rescue missions in and about Los Cabos. Its inventory of top-notch equipment includes intercepting patrol and defender boats and helicopters with trained and qualified crews on duty 24-7.
Patrols provide security by escorting cruise ships from 12 miles out up to anchor point, with small boats guarding their flanks during their stay in port. Naval personnel handle calls for help and monitor the dock on foot and aboard small boats in the marina. Foot patrols can be seen walking the beaches during high-tourism season. All personnel are trained to implement contingency plans and programs to assist civilians in times of emergency, such as hurricanes.
Ask any foreign resident living in Los Cabos whether he is afraid to live here and the answer is unequivocally the same. “I feel safer here than anywhere else I have ever lived.” As in any foreign country, one needs to be careful and wise. Follow rules and obey the laws.
Smart Tourist
Is Cabo San Lucas Safe? Ask yourself, “Would I do this in my own country?” Use common-sense precautions and visit only legitimate businesses and tourist areas during daylight hours. Avoid areas where criminal activity might occur can help ensure that travel to México is safe and enjoyable.
Just because you’re on vacation does not mean that you can drink to extreme, become disorderly, or walk late at night on darkened streets or alone on the beach.
Don’t take chances you wouldn’t if you were back home.
