San Jose’s Estuary

The Estuary, located next to downtown San Jose del Cabo, is a beautiful place to take a walk, bird watch and observe the beauty of nature.  Among the fine feathered friends you may see on your visit are herons, ducks, egrets, pelicans and osprey.  The Estuary has brought visitors to the area for more than three centuries including pirates, nature lovers and over 250 species of migratory birds.

The fresh water that empties into the estuary starts in the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains.  These mountains are peaks of granite that tower 6000 feet above sea level where the rain is more plentiful than in the dry desert below.  The river mostly travels underground for 30 miles or so before reaching the mouth of the estuary.  It has been a crucial element in the development of the area.  Pericu Indians, Spanish galleons and Jesuit missionaries were all drawn to this important source of fresh water.

When visiting San Jose del Cabo stop by for a walk through nature!  You never know what you may see.

One of our favorite road trips when friends come to visit us is going to Todos Santos.  Named “Pueblo Magico” in 2006, Todos Santos is a small coastal town at the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains on the Pacific coast of Baja California Sur.  It is about a 45 minute drive along a winding 2 lane highway through the desert and along the coast with a number of places to stop and enjoy the Pacific Ocean.  Todos Santos is near the Tropic of Cancer and about an hour south of La Paz, the capital city of Baja California Sur.

Todos Santos thrived as the Baja sugarcane capital during the 19th century.  Now the rich farmlands have been cultivated and the town prospers from an abundance of avocado, vegetable and chili farming, papaya and mango orchards, fishing and ranching.

Nuestra Señora del Pilar de La Paz is a mission that was founded in 1723 by father Jaime Bravo.  The mission contains the statue of the Virgin of Pilar, which is a focus of the town’s main festival in October.

The area offers a number of beautiful beaches.  Playa Las Palmas and Playa Los Cerritos are great for swimming and shell collecting.  Cerritos draws surfers from all over the world.

In town there are a number of art galleries, Mexican craft shops, restaurants, boutique hotels and restored colonial buildings.  Todos Santos is a great day trip from Cabo or if you prefer to spend more time we can help you with accommodations.

When you visit Cabo, sit back, relax and let us take care of your every need.   We’re here to help you create a memorable vacation in Los Cabos!

Artisanos located a few minutes from downtown Cabo is one of my favorite places to shop in the area.  I have seen the store double in size since we moved to Cabo in 1998   It is a favorite among the locals as well as tourists.  With a large array of Mexican arts, glassware, furniture, dinnerware, and decorating items this is a store you don’t want to miss.

Need a Doctor in Los Cabos?

Dr. Alfonso Jurado is my top recommendation if you need medical care while in the Los Cabos area.  My husband and I have both used Dr. Jurado during our 11 years of living in Cabo San Lucas and he is the first we call for ourselves, friends or clients who are visiting Cabo. I can always count on Dr. Jurado to be responsive to any call, honest and open in diagnosis and his prices are fair and equitable.

Dr. Jurado obtained his first degree of Medicine and tenure in Biochemistry at the National University of Mexico, in Mexico City in 1982. In 1984, he won a competition for a fellowship at the WHO Training Center in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he worked in Immunology and Infectious Diseases. Following, he engaged two postdoctoral positions, first, at the Pre-Clinical Research Division of Sandoz Lts. And later at the Pharmaceutical Research branch of Ciba-Geigy in Basel. He carried out research in Immunology and immune memory. He was also a consultant for the AIDS program at the WHO headquarters in Geneva.

In Canada, Dr. Jurado was Research Associate and Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Saskatchewan. In 1993, he won a Canadian National competition for International Development through a CIDA grant. Dr. Jurado has published several scientific reports in international scientific journals and obtained his second degree of Medicine from the Canadian Medical Council of Canada. He also received training in Internal Medicine from 1994 to 1998 and in Geriatrics from 1998 to 2000. In the USA he attended courses through CME programs from Harvard Medical School in Boston Massachusetts, in 1998, the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, 1999 and the Alzheimers Research Center at the UCSD, California, in 1999. He is a member of the Medical Research Council of Canada, the New York Academy of Sciences, and a founding member of the International Society of Neurovirology. Due to his extensive international exposure, he is fluent in English, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese. He established his general medical practice in Los Cabos in 2004.

I didn’t know about all of his credentials when we first called Dr. Jurado. What I learned upon meeting him is that he is an excellent Dr. who truly cares about his patients. His Walk-In Mediclinic is located in San Jose del Cabo, Carret. Transp. Km28, Plaza el Zalate L-3. (Next to La Jolla). He handles walk in consults, emergency consults, Ultrasound, X-Rays, EKG, MRI, Emergency room services, Ambulance, Ground and Air and Paramedics.

In addition to his clinic services Dr. Jurado makes house calls and offers home care. He actually came to our office one day when one of us became ill. He is on call 24/7.

This is a copy of a letter sent to Dr. Jurado that I wanted to share

Hola Dr J,
Thank you Thank you, we are still here in the Sharp hospital in San Diego. We both wonder if Larry would even be alive had it not been for your professional skills and knowledge. He had a clot in his leg, more than one clot in his lung, phemoinia and was in atrial flutter. The medical staff are very good and he has several Drs. checking in on him. They are trying to get his heart rate at a steady slower pace so we can travel but out of the blue it will just go high and we are waiting to see if that can be corrected. He is still quite weak but defiantly improving.
I tell everyone what a wonderful Dr. and man you are. Brings tears to my eyes when I think about all you did for us. I don’t know many Dr’s that would have done everything you did. You truly did go above and beyond the call of duty, I am sending you the biggest hug full of gratitude and thanks. It sounds like we may be here for a couple more days. My friend Heather is also glad to have crossed paths with you. We will let you know when we return to Canada. I’m not sure if you realise it but besides being a Dr. I truly believe you are a angel. I tried my Visa when I got here and it worked, thank you for taking me to the bank.
Forever gratful Larry and Peggy

Let Me Tell You About Tequila
Tequila (Spanish pronunciation: [teˈkila]) is a Blue Agave-based spirit made primarily in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, 65 kilometres (40 mi) northwest of Guadalajara, and in the highlands (Los Altos) of the western Mexican state of Jalisco.

Types of tequila
There are two basic categories of tequila: mixtos and 100% agave. Mixtos use up to 49% of other sugars in the fermentation process, with agave taking up the remainder. Mixtos use both glucose and fructose sugars.

With 100% agave tequila, blanco or plata is harsher with the bold flavors of the distilled agave up front, while reposado and añejo are smoother, subtler, and more complex. As with other spirits that are aged in casks, tequila takes on the flavors of the wood, while the harshness of the alcohol mellows. The major flavor distinction with 100% agave tequila is the base ingredient, which is more vegetal than grain spirits (and often more complex).

Tequila is usually bottled in one of five categories:[7]

Blanco (“white”) or plata (“silver”) – white spirit, un-aged and bottled or stored immediately after distillation, or aged less than two months in stainless steel or neutral oak barrels;

Joven (“young”) or oro (“gold”) – is the result of blending Silver Tequila with Reposado and/or Añejo and/or extra Añejo Tequila;

Reposado (“rested”) – aged a minimum of two months, but less than a year in oak barrels;

Añejo (“aged” or “vintage”) – aged a minimum of one year, but less than 3 years in oak barrels;

Extra Añejo (“extra aged” or “ultra aged”) – aged a minimum of three years in oak barrels. This category was established in March 2006.
