San Jose del Cabo Mission

Father Nicolas Tamaral established the Mission San Jose del Cabo Anuiti in 1730 as part of the Jesuit colonization of the peninsula of Baja California.  The building site was moved by the missionaries on several occasions in an attempt to flee from epidemics and mosquito infestations, while securing a source of fresh water.  Early buildings were simple structures of adobe, sticks and palm fronds, vulnerable to storm damage.

In 1734, the region’s Pericu Indians destroyed the four southern missions, including the Mission of San Jose. Father Tamaral was murdered with great cruelty during the uprising which is depicted on the tile mural above the church’s entrance.

The Jesuits left the Baja Peninsula in 1768, to be followed by the Franciscans and then the Dominicans.  The Combonian missionaries served the Mission of San Jose from 1948 to 1986. Since, the church has been in the hands of diocesan clergy.

The twin-towered church seen today was built in 1932, at the traditional location on the plaza long occupied by the Mission of San Jose.

Cabo San Lucas Charities

Casa Hogar  Provdes security, shelter, food, education, and a loving home environment for children.

On the 26th of September, 1990, Lic. Armando Antonio Aguilar Ruibal, known as Public Notary #1, finalized the document that created “Casa Hogar de Cabo San Lucas” an a official Civil Association in Mexico.

The association was recognized as a legal not for profit organization in Mexico with the ability to grant tax deductible receipts for the purpose of raising money to support its charitable function. Soon after that time a group of people in Washington state formed a 501 (c)(3) for the purpose of supporting and contributing to the needs of the Mexican AC (Civil Association).

Land for the facility was donated to the A.C., money was raised in both countries and plans were drawn up for the building. The building was constructed to the stage of “obra negra” which means to the stage of basic walls, roof and sub floor.

At some point a dispute arose in regard to the use of funds raised and how they were accounted for. The dispute has never resolved. Although charges of wrong doing were never filed or proven many of the original contributors felt betrayed. No further funds were forthcoming and the project came to a halt some time in 1996.

In late 2005 the original founders approached the local Rotary club to see if the club had any interest in trying to restart the project. After some discussion the club determined that it might be a worthwhile project and made the decision to investigate further. In February of 2007 a group was formed that would ultimately become the members of the new “Casa Hogar de Cabo San Lucas”. Work began on transferring the A.C. and its assets to include the land and building, bank accounts and other inventory. With the legal transfer of the corporation, its assets and original members replaced by completely new members, construction began on May 28, 2007. Funding for the construction project was provided through the Boulder City Sunrise Rotary club of Boulder City Nevada .The total amount committed was $350,000.00. Additional goods and supplies were donated by local businesses within the community. The building was completed for that amount however more is needed to finish the grounds and landscaping.

Construction was completed in mid November of 2007 and the building was dedicated in December 2007. The first two children were welcomed to Casa Hogar de Cabo San Lucas on February 6, 2008.

The final operational agreement with the State’s governing authority (DIF) was signed by Michael Pearce as President and Clicerio Mercado Hernandez as Vice President and governmental officials in the state capitol of La Paz on March 14, 2008.

Mr. Michael Pearce as President and Sr. Clicerio Mercado Hernandez as Vice President provided leadership on a daily basis during construction, operational start up, training, government interface and fund raising.

Operational funding up to this point has come partially from the Boulder City Rotary club accompanied by a grant from the Los Cabos Childers Foundation. Those funds amount to $150,000.00. The estimated annual operating budget is approximately $300,000.00

On February 6, 2008 the first boy was received at Casa Hogar, Joaquin was just 6 years. In less than 3 months we had 16 boys. Joaquin was placed back into his family after living with us for about a year. He now is living with his grand parents, we consider that a success. Currently we have 24 boys from the ages of 6 to 14. Our residence levels have varied slightly and we have had a total of 4 boys placed back into their own family environments. As funding becomes available we will be able to achieve our capacity of 60 boys.

We now have 18 months of operation behind us and are concentrating on the task of refining our operations with the help of some new members on our Board of Directors. The main task is to secure consistent funding Fundraising has begun and we are establishing annual events such as an Opera Concert sponsored by Querencia Golf and the Cabo Celebrity Golf Classic sponsored by National Insurance Partners of Austin Texas. Private donations are being channeled through The International Community Foundation in San Diego, California and the Los Cabos Children’s Foundation in Cabo San Lucas Mexico

The Cabo San Lucas Fire Department is a civil association that operates in large part from the donations of equipment, supplies, or money by people wanting to invest in their security. This project was made a reality because of good, hard work and each person who contributed his or her own donation.

The Cabo San Lucas Fire Department was founded in 1982, when a single citizen by the name of Gildardo Payan Azcarraga, hailing from the state of Sinaloa but adopted by these lands, became aware of the social necessities at that time. Among them was the need for a group of firemen to look after the security of the people; armed with a pail, couple of radios, an old vehicle, the patio of a house as central, but most importantly loaded with enthusiasm, he founded what today you know as the Cabo San Lucas Fire Department.

The priority of the fire department is safeguarding the lives and goods of both locals and visitors who arrive at this tourist destination. The firemen believe unquestionably in prevention through the education of the public; to prevent is to save lives and goods in advance
